About The Organisation
The George Institute for Global Health was
established in Sydney in 1999 as a not-for-profit organization
dedicated to the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and
injury, through domestic and international programs. The institute is a legally
independent institution affiliated with Peking University in Beijing, and the
University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine in Sydney. The Goerge Institute for
Global Health has offices in Sydney and Beijing and will shortly open an office
in Hyderabad, India.
Our mission is
to find solutions to common health problems through excellence and thought
leadership in research, and translating that research into policy, practice and
capacity building. In achieving that mission, we are committed to ensuring the
integration of good business practices throughout all our operations.
The
institute has grown rapidly since its inception, and currently employs over
250 staff at
its headquarters in Sydney and approximately 40 staff in its Beijing
office. Research operations are conducted at approximately 400 centres in more
than 30 countries worldwide. While Asia is a major focus, The Goerge Institute
for Global Health is also active throughout Europe, North America, and
Australasia.
The George Institute for Global Health is
made up of several divisions and programs that oversee numerous large-scale
international and regional projects funded by a diverse range of sponsors, both
public and private. The
research portfolio of the institute includes randomized trials of new treatment
and prevention strategies, surveys, and observational studies of the causes and
outcomes of disease and injury. The current global research budget of the
institute is approximately $25-30 million per year. Research revenue comes from
national and international medical research agencies, government, private
sponsors and industry. All of the institute’s research is initiated by academic
staff of the institute or colleagues at partner institutions including the
University of Oxford, the University of Pittsburgh, Peking University and the
University of Melbourne.

Context
The Goerge Institute for Global Health,
China (GIC)
aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, information and ideas, and skills
across all areas of clinical research, training, teaching, clinical practice,
and policy development with our partners in China. The ultimate goal is a sustained commitment
to the implementation of evidence-based policy and practice that addresses the
burden of disease.
Diabetes
Research (DR) is a new erected section
in GIC. The key role of DR team is to support the development and
implementation of high quality projects / initiatives in diabetes in China. The
team member will participate in all phases of project development, providing
advice on concept development, project management structures, logistics,
capacity development activities, potential funding sources, media relations,
and strategies for the dissemination of research findings to facilitate uptake
into practice. Studies cover the area of epidemiology, prevention, health care
and management, treatment and health economy on diabetes.
In collaboration
with IDF (International Diabetes Federation) and CDS (Chinese Diabetes
Society), several large-scale investigation projects have been launched to
assess the incidence, care, treatment and cost of diabetes mellitus in China.
Hundreds of health care facilities have been covered in these studies. Talents
have academic study background are welcome to join the team.
Key Accountabilities
§ Research
(reporting to the Senior Research Fellow)
o
Support to the senior
research fellow in GI or the senior specialists from professional organizations,
in developing study
protocols, operation manuals, training programmes, health
education materials, data collection tools and quality control plans.
o Keep routine communications with project
implementation team to ensure that the academic support is given timely and key
principles are followed accordingly during implementation, including technical
training, study participants sampling and randomization, study monitoring, data
collection coordination and other technical tasks for the project.
o Conduct or supervise the data cleaning, working
closely with the data manager.
o Assist or lead the data analysis and the development of reports.
§ Implementation (reporting
to the Project Manager)
o Provide technical
training to the local research team as required
o Participate
in the study monitoring activities when required
o Responsible
for data collection coordination
o Responsible
for study participants randomization and other technical tasks for the project
o
Support to the senior research fellow in GI or the
senior specialists from professional organizations, in communicating with
project relevant key stakeholders.
o Other
roles required to ensure the successful implementation of study protocols.

Provide
a consistent level of contribution to the research activities of the Division

Assist
with the preparation of new grant applications as required
o
Analyse
data and prepare manuscripts when necessary
Skills,
Knowledge and Experience
§
Master’s
or higher degree in clinical medicine/endocrinology/health service management / epidemiology /health economics
/ statistics /
related area, or other relevant postgraduate qualification with specialist
experience in these areas.
§ Research
background in diabetes
management with
post-graduate qualifications preferred.
§ Advanced technical writing
and oral presentation skills in Mandarin/English
§ Can function independently
while knowing own limitations and when referral of issues to supervisor is
required
§ Highly motivated, results
oriented and able to deliver on time
§ Well organised and with
good time management
§ Attention to detail and
rigorous methodological approach
§ Flexibility and the ability
to work effectively in an ambiguous and continually changing environment
